Testimonial
I
was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 1997, and began losing my
hair shortly after starting treatment. It was devastating! But family
and friends were extremely supportive.
Trying to adjust to my hair loss and always feeling cold, I made
myself a hat that was reversible and seamless. My son, Gary said to me
“every time I look at you in your hat Mom, I hope and pray you
survive”.
HOPECAPS
was born.
I
soon realized that colorful, comfortable, good quality headwear was
desperately needed. I gave hats away to friends and acquaintances that I
met through dragon boating and they all encouraged me to sell my hats.
Now, HOPECAPS make people feel positive and secure about themselves
while going through treatment for cancer. Whether young or old, HOPECAPS
has a hat to fit and please everyone. Our hat styles have grown from one
to many, including scarves, different types of turbans, winter hats,
reversible tams and sun/golf hats.
HOPECAPS
donates a percentage of sales to breast cancer research or related
organizations. I hope in the near future we will have life without
cancer and that the monies donated from the sale of my hats will make a
difference.
I
joined Dragons Abreast in 1999 and it became my outside support after
treatment. Dragons Abreast
is a dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors, showing the world that
there is life after breast cancer. Now, there are over 70 breast cancer
teams in Canada, from Halifax to Vancouver and many supportive
friendships have been established throughout the country.
Dragon
boating for breast cancer survivors has been in existence since 1996.
Upper body exercise after breast cancer surgery continues to be
discouraged because it might cause lymphodema. Yet, recent research
studying the effects of dragon boating on breast cancer survivors has
proven this notion to be false. Women from around the world and all
walks of life are now safely participating in this exciting sport.
Many thanks to my family and friends who are helping me make my dream
come true.
